Harvey Thomas (Tom) Calvert
I’ve lived at Cape Fear, NC, for the last 12
/ 13 years and have done lots of traveling, first the US in a camper and now
abroad. Still have to get to Africa and Antarctica but been lots of other
places. Presently planning trip while I recover from a knee replacement.
Instead of "H. Thomas Calvert" just make it plain "Tom" -
no one any longer remembers what the "H" stood for - especially me.
(Editors note: It’s “Harvey”, Tom) – October 2005 |

- Lockie and I enjoyed being with the great members of the great
class of '52. A great highlight of the year was our attendance at the
inaugural. of Dr. Gast to Presidency of Lehigh. It was an exciting
and moving experience.
It was not too
long ago that we returned from a 2 week cruise of the Mediterranean. Great
trip. We enjoyed being with most of our 4 children and 11 grandchildren for
the holidays and are looking forward to the 4 graduations coming up in '08.
Drew Camarda
will grad from Stanford, Brett Camarda from Brown, Elizabeth Young
from W. Virginia, and Brooke Camarda from St. Pauls Prep in New
Hampshire. We are trying to figure out the logistics of all of that.
I still have an
office I still go to everyday (Commercial Realestate). Thank God! Makes my
life free of many empty hours. Great to see all the great members of the
great class of '52. Thanks for all your work in keeping us together.

I married Marguerite Thyberg, from my '48 high school class in Ridgewood, NJ, had one son who has turned out to be an engineer, too.
Bell Labs was my employer from '54 thru '89, except for 4 years at Bellcomm, Inc. At the start, I designed some transistor circuits for the Titan radio guidance system, but this soon transformed into a lifelong dance with astrodynamics, programming and computer technology. I helped to design the guidance program for the Titan ICBM, and a complex simulation program for the Apollo lunar flights that was used to plan the missions and scope out what was possible.
At Bellcomm I helped to plan the Skylab missions. But then I watched in dismay as the US, in its wisdom, killed the golden goose and terminated the space program. Teams of brilliant engineers and scientists were disbanded and released to do "more productive" work. What a tragedy! I had the rare privilege to participate in the greatest intellectual exploration in history.
I became involved with the UNIX operating system and, since retirement, have become an enthusiast of Linux and the open source movement, running my consulting business for amusement and stimulation.
Thanks, Lehigh, for helping me to learn how to learn.
