Charlie Paules has been in Hilton Head for nine summers, and 2003 was the hottest yet. Charlie and his wife, Susan, did get away in May 2003 for a cruise from Lisbon to Rome, with stops on the way. - Winter 2004 Alumni Bulletin
Summer 2003: Ralph Fortney mentioned attending a Lehigh Alumni meeting at the South Carolina Yacht Club (Hilton Head) and chatting with Bob Homing and Charlie Paules, who are residents in the area. |

From 50th Reunion Book, 2002 - On graduation day, I began employment with the Radio Corporation of America (RCA). I was assigned to a government communication group in Camden, NJ and worked with analog, digital and secure communication circuitry using transistors, digital chips and custom microchips throughout my career.
In 1956, I married a local girl, Carolyn Schroeder, and bought the house where we still reside in Collingswood, NJ. In 1958, a daughter, Janet, was born and a second daughter, Sandra, was born in 1963.
An active life followed with work, church and family activities. In 1971, we purchased land and had a cottage built in the Pocono Mountains which has served as "stress-relief'.
In 1986, Jack Welch (GE) bought RCA and a new era began. I retired in 1991 and now use my free time to enjoy my hobbies including world and national traveling, model railroading (HO) and sailing my Sunfish sailboat. |

 George Pitsilos
From 50th Reunion Book, 2002 - After graduation, I served 2 years in the U.S. Navy. In 1955, my wife and I opened the first of our chain of upscale gift shops in Eastern Pennsylvania. We had a total of eight shops by the 1970's.
We adopted our 2 sons in 1962 and 1967, at which time Irene became a full-time mother and retired from active participation in our business. Both sons are married and the youngest son has provided us with a grandson, born in October 1999. Our oldest son is a Moravian College graduate and our youngest is a Lehigh University graduate in the Class of '89.
In 1992, our business was sold to another retailer; and I retired to a life of traveling and playing golf at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem and The Oaks in Sarasota, FL.
Irene and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary January 27, 2002.
April 14th, 2001 - Sold my Business in 1992 and retired. Now traveling and wintering in Florida at The Oaks in Sarasota. Still playing golf at Saucon Valley and The Oaks.
Winter, 1980: George Pitsilos
is as at home in the card and gift business as he is in his native Bethlehem where his business is located. Straight out of Lehigh, he opened his first shop, taking over a bankrupt store and making it the first loop in what has become a small chain. The Spinning Wheel shops are an interesting mixture. Four serve local residents in the Allentown / Bethlehem area, while two are located in Hershey, home of Hershey chocolate, and one in the Poconos at the Pocono Hershey Resort. The latter three are much frequented by tourists. The merchandise mix Is, however, basically the same in all the shops. The shops handle primarily cards and gifts. The shops lean toward better, higher-priced merchandise. Further expansion is a possibility. Twenty-five years in business have not dulled George's taste for a challenge. |

PodellApril 2002 - It wasn't long after graduation when Uncle Sam beckoned. After a short stint at Ft. Dix I was sent to Michigan with the US Army Audit Agcy for 2 years.
In '54 I started my CPA career progressing from the largest firm , then smaller, until I operated my own. In 1970 I made a career change and became Chief Financial Officer of a series of corporations. In 1992 I switched back and resumed private practice. I now call myself "semi-retired" only because I still tend to habitually respond to the call of Tax Season.
As to my family life, Pearl and I were married in 1980 and now live in Princeton, NJ. We each have 2 children. We live half way between Ken (U of P'84) in Philadelphia and Melanie (Princeton'86) in NYC. Daughter Bari (LU'81) resides in N. Potomac, MD, and Jotham (Princeton'84) is in California.....and then there are 4 grandchildren to enjoy. I sang as an undergraduate and I'm singing still....now at Westminster Choir College with the Community Choir. Some of my other pleasures are gardening, birding, traveling and theater.

From 50th Reunion Book, 2002 - In the 2 weeks following graduation from Lehigh, Jim married Bonnie Fritz, reported to work with Exxon (then Esso) in Baton Rouge, LA and reported to Indiantown Gap, PA to begin to meet his 2-year ROTC commitment as an Army Finance Officer, stationed first in the U.S. and then in Germany.
Upon discharge, he continued his career as a pilot plant engineer at Esso Research Labs in Baton Rouge and in the next 11 years there, 3 daughters (Dianne, Judi and Bethany) were born.
In the following 25 years, Jim served as President of Exxon's affiliate in the Philippines, as Vice President of Exxon Chemicals Asia Pacific in Hong Kong, as Secretary of Exxon's Management Committee in New York and then successively as Vice President of Chemical Specialties, as Vice President of worldwide Plastic Operations, and as Vice President Technology from which position he retired in 1986.
Jim and Bonnie now summer at Lake Tahoe in Nevada and winter near Palm Springs, CA. Both locations allow Jim to pursue his love of golf while Bonnie pursues her hobby of oil painting. The rest of their time is devoted to their 3 daughters and their families, which now include 8 grandchildren, ages 3 to 22, who live close to Palm Springs.
In June 2002, Jim and Bonnie will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. To highlight that event, 12 family members will tour New Zealand and Australia for 3 weeks. After that, on to bigger and better things! |

From 50th Reunion Book, 2002 - After serving 30 months in the U.S. Navy as an electronics instructor, I enrolled at Lehigh University in 1948. Upon graduation, I accepted a job with Westinghouse Electric Corporation and was assigned to the graduate student program. The Westinghouse Transformer Division subsequently offered me a position as manufacturing engineer. Early in my career, I was selected to participate in a year-long program with the Ford Motor Company to learn automation techniques used in the auto industry. In 1967, I was appointed manager of a team responsible for planning, building and equipping a factory to manufacture small power transformers. The completed facility was chosen by the editors of Factory Magazine as one of the 10 best plants built in 1968. In 1985, I won an award for outstanding contributions to Westinghouse. I hold one patent. When I retired in 1987, I was Manager of Facilities Engineering and Reliability with responsibility for plants in Virginia, Puerto Rico and Mexico.
My wife, Nancy, and I have 3 daughters and 5 grandchildren. We look forward to celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary in 2002. |

From 50th Reunion Book, 2002 -
After both commissioning and graduation, I served in the USAF for 2 years, first briefly at Lackland AFB and then at Castle AFB (SAC). During this time, I met classmates
Disbrow
(deceased), Scarr and Toven (deceased), to name those I readily remember.
Then off to Columbia University School of Business for an MS, followed by 13 years at Price Waterhouse (PW). During this period, I became a CPA and married Toby. We have a son, Laurence (LU '82) and a daughter, Shari. I left PW to become the CFO of Rheingold Breweries (RB), a client, and a fun job because of its then association with the METS and JETS. While at RB, I was elected the Mayor of Irvington, NY, serving 3 terms.
RB was acquired in an "unfriendly" takeover and yours truly was "fired". Then on to American Cyanamid Co. (ACY) from which I retired in January 1994 as Controller. During my ACY career, I was "recalled" to Mayoral political life and was elected twice more, serving until I relocated to Vero Beach, FL in April 1994. Classmates
Tom Balch,
Dave Gildersleeve
and Harry Miller
are also in Vero Beach.
May 30th, 2001 - Frequently see our classmate
Harry Miller since he relocated to Vero Beach, Florida. He is a member of the Moorings Club of which I am president and appears to be a fine golfer. By the way while I spent over 20 years in Wayne NJ, I never was at Picatinny Arsenal. Sorry about that and this poor typing. Hope to be at our 50th.
November 9th, 2000 - Gus Magistro
thinks Bob may have worked at Picatinny Arsenal with him at one time. |
