Paul Waltonmy wife Edna and I and a magnificent sunrise in Scottsdale, AZPaul in Ventura, CAPaul Walton

November 2006 - Hi Bill:  Not very much new to report.  I saw Pat Moran at a sports bar in Tucson where we gathered to see the Lehigh / Lafayette football game last week.  Unfortunately the outcome wasn’t what we had hoped for.  I really felt old when I met a young couple from the classes of 2004 and 2005.  I never thought to write their names down and at this stage of my life, if I don’t write it I forget it.

My wife Edna and I still like to travel though we haven’t done as much since 911.  This coming year in May we will take in some shows in Branson, MO and in the fall we are planning to take a cruise out of Boston that goes up into Canada and maybe catch the leaves turning colors during our trip.

We still love our life in sunny Arizona.  The weather this time of year is magnificent; still shirtsleeve weather though we are anticipating some cooling off in the next couple of weeks.

Best wishes to you and to all of my classmates,Paul Walton

December 2005 -  I was a married student during my time at Lehigh.  My wife Dessie and I lived in the married student housing at Steel Field and that was a blast.  The walls were paper thin and you really got to know a lot about your neighbors; some of it funny, some of it not so good.

After graduation in 1952 I worked as a Mechanical Engineer for the following companies: (mostly in marketing and sales)

  •  Carbide and Carbon Chemicals, Oak Ridge, TN

  •  United Fruit Co., New York City, NY

  •  Worthington Corp., East Orange, NJ

  •  York Corp., York, PA

  •  McQuay-Perfex Corp., Minneapolis, MN

  •  Diversified Energy, Minneapolis, MN

I retired in 1992 but I kept working, on a consulting basis, until early in 1997.  During that period (1995) my wife of 48 years died of cancer.  This had a profound effect on my life.  I was lonely and after the grieving passed I started to date and eventually ended up marrying a lady I had previously met in Tucson, Arizona.  My daughter who lived in Tucson played cupid and encouraged the relationship.  She tells her friends that she actually got to choose her second mother.  My new wife is Edna and we are enjoying our life together to the fullest.  We travel quite a bit and are very much involved with our church.  My wife is Superintendent of the Sunday School and I am the church Treasurer.  This takes up a lot of our time.  We had a home built in Tucson, AZ and are permanent residents here.

This is all for now.  Eventually I will add some pictures to the profile.  My address is 4123 S. Apache Well Drive, Tucson, AZ 85730, phone 520-296-9827

I saw Pat Moran recently at the Lehigh / Lafayette football telecast.  The game was a disappointment but it was enjoyable getting together with Pat and some of the other Lehigh folks; even the Lafayette crowd was fun to be with.

Not much of the information has changed.  Edna and I continue to travel and make one or two trips a year; mostly here in the states.  We were in the air flying to England when the 911 terrorist attack occurred and we haven’t ventured abroad since.  We did go to Hawaii and cruised the islands this year.  It was a great trip.  I hadn’t been to Hawaii since 1946 when I was in the navy and was billeted at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel for a few days.

We have a pretty good size family with five children, ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren.  A number of them are here in Arizona so we get to see them frequently.  We drove to Minnesota in October to see my sons and their families and while we were traveling we went to Springfield, IL and visited the new Lincoln Museum and Library.  It is fabulous.  In the six months they have been open they have logged in 500,000 visitors.  I’d recommend it to anyone.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a super New Year to follow,  Paul

From 50th Reunion Book, 2002 - Dick joined the General Electric Company Manufacturing Management Program following Lehigh graduation.  He subsequently served in the U.S. Army Research and Engineering Command based in Fort Eustis, Virginia.  Following military service, he returned to General Electric and held managerial positions in New York, North Carolina, France and Arkansas.  His wife, Adrienne, is a native of Toronto and they have 2 sons and a daughter.  After a 25-year career with GE, he joined Drexel Heritage Furnishings in North Carolina as Manager Engineering.  Dick put his Lehigh accounting courses for engineers and computer knowledge to good use in Adrienne's women's fashion business for 21 years.  The business is now owned and operated by their daughter.  Since retiring in 1993, Dick has continued to enjoy a wide range of interests, including world travel, winter skiing, hiking, sailing, photography, civic and church activities.  Dick and Adrienne also enjoy spending time at a mountain home in Blowing Rock, NC, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway with several nearby peaks exceeding mile high elevations.

Spring 2007 Alumni Bulletin - Letters from two of my favorite friends found me early in the new year‑Randy Zehner and John Kerr.  Randy passed along information of our current Class of 1952 scholarship recipient, and John wished season's greetings and told me about a book called Big Games, College Football's Greatest Rivalries by Michael Bradley.  The Lehigh / Lafayette traditional rivalry is prominently mentioned in the book.

Spring 2006 - Pat Moran received a nice note arrived in the New Year from Randy, along with bios of our Class of 1952 Scholarship recipients.  We have two recipients this year, Raymond G. Lahoud '06, Easton, Pa., and Marissa K. lannarone '06, North Caldwell, N.J.  Both sent warm letters of thanks for the opportunity to study at Lehigh, which may not have been possible without the financial help of our class.  Raymond graduated with highest honors and will attend law school.  Marissa graduated with higher honors, is captain of the field hockey team, and made first‑team All Patriot League.  They are two truly impressive Lehigh students.

January 2006 - Randy passed along more update letters from our Scholarship Recipients.  His letter and their updates:

Fall 2005 - I receive periodic updates from Randy Zehner, our very diligent class agent, regarding the progress of the Lehigh Fund.  Randy happily notes that you are opening your wallets and donating generously.  We have exceeded our goal of $I00,000, and 60 percent participation is within sight.

August 2005 - My plate is beginning to overflow and I find myself unable to commit the time and energy to the role of Class Agent which it deserves.  I'm healthy and happy but have finally come to realize that I can't do it all.  I offer my immediate resignation.  I am proud of our accomplishments, particularly in the last campaign and appreciate the support you and your staff have provided.  Thank you.   Sincerely, Randy

April 2005 - Please be aware that I now have a new E-Mail address:  rzehner@rcn.com  I also have good news to report on our class fundraising efforts.  We have already exceeded our goal for this fiscal year. A complete report will be in the mail soon.  Thanks everyone.  Keep up the good work.  Randy

From Winter 2004 Bulletin - Class agent Randy Zehner, a hardworking classmate and good guy, is kicking off another fundraising season and reports that an additional option is being made available for classmates who wish to contribute to our Class Scholarship Fund.  The Fund currently has a book value of $40,410 and has made it possible to provide financial aid to nine worthy students in recent years.  Our goal is to bring the book value to $400,000 by our 55th Class Reunion in 2007.  This would provide a full scholarship for at least one eligible student.  Let's all support the Class Scholarship Fund with generous contributions when the appropriate time comes.

July 2004 - I am happy to report that Edna Ball and I were married on July 14, 2004 at a family gathering in Hellertown Penna.  I am a happy man and now understand how Ed Leidheiser felt several years ago.  I should also mention that July 14 is not only my wedding anniversary but also my bride's birthday.  The consequences of forgetting that special day are unthinkable. Randy

From Sprint 2004 Alumni Bulletin:  Randy Zehner called just before the column deadline with good news:  First, Randy announced his engagement to Edna Ball, a very fine lady who lives in the same adult community.  Next, Randy has agreed to serve as class agent, taking over from the very capable Ralph Fortney, who served admirably for 15 years.  A pleasant aspect of the job, according to Ralph, is keeping in touch with the recipient of scholastic aide from the Scholarship Fund endowed by the class.  We salute Ralph for all his years of devotion to the class.

Randy Zehner sent this communiqué Spring 2003: "Congratulations everyone!  We set a record attendance of 122 returning alumni (at our 50th) of which 118 of 411 classmates (29 percent) attended the parade.  More than 9.5 million dollars was presented to the university as a result of contributions over the last five years.  This is a marvelous accomplishment."  These are the revised final figures.

ZehnerFrom 50th Reunion Book, 2002 - Entered Bethlehem Steel Corporation loop course.  Served in U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Japan, 1952 to 1954.  Employed by Bethlehem Steel in Saucon Structural Mills from 1952 to 1964.  Engaged in start-up of 160 inch plate mill and 80 inch hot sheet mill at Bums Harbor, Indiana plant.  Worked as Yield Engineer and Technology Engineer. Retired in 1983 as Senior Engineer in Technology.

Married Gloria Reese in 1952; 3 daughters and 3 grandchildren. Gloria passed away in 1980.

Currently very active in a local Moravian Church, serving in leadership and managing a program to bring public health supplies, medication and instruction to children on the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua.  Greatest pleasure is fly fishing and touring the northern Rocky Mountains as well as opera, choral and classical music.

January 8, 2002 - On reporting Tom Mohr's death today said, "...Fifty years seems like such a short time."
