Scripture:
Luke 22:19-20
(NKJV) - “And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it,
and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is My body which is given
for you; do this in remembrance of Me.’ Likewise He also took the
cup after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in My
blood, which is shed for you.’”
Message:
A gathering of familiar faces filled the room as the Disciples
prepared for the traditional Passover. However, this gathering
was different. The Disciples had witnessed the miracles of
Jesus; healing the sick, providing for the poor, raising the dead,
and casting out demons. In preparation for the sacrament,
Jesus offered comfort to His Disciples. By the power of the
Holy Spirit, He took the bread and said it was His body, given for
them. He then offered the cup, speaking of His blood poured
out for them. This moment was both an offering and a
foreshadowing of His sacrifice.
Jesus
began to speak of the trials and betrayal He would soon face as He
revealed the new covenant. Despite what Jesus had previously
told them, especially on the journey to Jerusalem, the Disciples
still could not imagine Him being publicly humiliated, persecuted,
rejected and executed. As Jesus spoke of betrayal, the
Disciples were in disbelief. How could one of us betray
Him? How could one of us deny Him? In time, they
would come to understand the depth of human sin and weakness.
In
this act during Passover, Jesus established a new covenant – not
merely a tradition or moment of spiritual renewal, but an
everlasting reminder of who He is and what He would willingly endure
for us. God’s ultimate love offering to mankind.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, on this sacred night of gathering and offering, we come
to the table in remembrance. In the bread and the cup, You offer
Yourself to us. Prepare our hearts to receive Your presence and
remain mindful of Your faithful love. Amen.
