God Is Our Refuge

Scripture: Psalm 46:1 & 7 (NIV) – “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble…. The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.”

Message: Several years ago I was driving home, planning to arrive before dark. Suddenly, I heard something large hit underneath the car. The car seemed to steer oddly, but I continued driving, trying to get to a safe exit. I was on the interstate in a barren area now, barely able to steer, and I had to go onto the shoulder.

I was grateful to get safely off the interstate and have a cell phone and roadside service. I called and someone was to come in about 45 minutes.

I started praying, thanking God for His help and praying parts of Scriptures, especially from Psalm. A peace came over me. I especially prayed that God would send the right person to help me. An hour passed and dusk started. I called again and the driver was to come soon.

Fast traffic was very near and I began to get uneasy, for each time another “18 wheeler” came by, the car shook. This was not big trouble (unless a vehicle hit me). I prayed more. Another hour passed and darkness came. As I was phoning back, a tow truck pulled up. A young guy came and asked if I needed help. He was with my roadside service – but not on the call to me. He signed in and started working. Fortunately he found only a flat tire, changed it, and cautioned me not to drive too fast with it. How grateful I was for this kind young man’s help!

I asked him why he stopped and he told me he saw I was alone and thought I might need help. God knew all along where I was, alone in the dark; provided me refuge and strength; and sent the right person to help me!

This became small trouble, thankfully, but our nation has big trouble right now with COVID-19, loss of lives and finances, unrest, and more. “The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress!”

Prayer: Father God, I thank You that You know where we are and what we need and our country needs. You are our refuge and strength no matter how small or large our trouble may be. Amen.
