Kay
and I stopped in to see Patty in Lakeland, Florida, yesterday.
As you can see from the picture she has escaped the wrath of age far better
than I have. We had a nostalgic talk about "The Good Ol' Days" as we
reminisced on how we would walk to Markham Elementary every morning along
with Pat Campbell,
Jane Texter,
Charles Enlind, Bunky Wilder (Now
deceased), Georgie Bowers and Carver Kennedy - The last three
moved away before we graduated to Mt Lebanon Junior High..
I hadn't realized that
Jane was Patty's sister-in-law
although I had noticed the identical married names - Shows you how observant
I am. Patty gave me a little information on
Jane that I posted on her page.
Patty has some of her family close by and is planning extensive trips
this Summer to see the rest of them - we were pleased to meet her son
David who lives nearby.
I told Patty that we probably
talked more on Monday that we did all through High School. It was a
pleasant time being with her. Kay and I hope to do again, soon.
- Bill Erdman - May 2009
Hello
all '48 class, I am bummed that I will not be at the 60th reunion.
However, my life is about as full as I can manage. I've been able to travel
quite a bit, the most recent out of the USA being to China, a trip that I
loved. The most recent in the USA was to a lake in East Texas. Although
while there I wondered if they think that they are in their own country.
They certainly have their own language. I am a resident of Florida but I
spend summers in St. Charles, Illinois in an apartment in daughter Dona's
home. Right now we are helping her daughter rehab a recently purchased
home in Geneva. My 3 "kids" and their families now number 10 grandchildren,
3 spouses of the same and 6 great grandchildren. I'll be with 4 of those
cuties this weekend as you celebrate in Mt Lebanon. I wish I could be in 2
places at once. Have a great time together. I'll be playing with the
greats or unpacking and organizing a kitchen. I am blessed! Pat

April 2007: Dear
Bill, Sometimes I have to pinch myself to
make sure that I am real and that I am really enjoying old age as much as I
am. Since Christmas, I have been privileged to go on bird trips each
Thursday with an Audubon group from Winter Haven / Lakeland area. These
have taken me from coast to coast here in central Florida with a group of
most interesting people. One highlight has been seeing whooping cranes;
another has been painted buntings; yet another is sightings of redheaded
woodpeckers. I could go on and mention a roseate spoonbill and black
crowned night herons right on Lake Parker, but my list could go on and on.
You get the picture; I am enjoying the pursuit and the people who also get
up at ridiculous early hours in order to find winged creatures.
As of
today, I have been home for one week from a luxurious cruise aboard the
Westerdam, a Holland America vessel. My son David and his wife,
Susan signed up for a Caribbean trip with a bit of apprehension since
Susan is confined to a motorized chair due to MS. It is a definite
praise to the Lord that all went well on the cruise. We had a handicap room
which worked well for us. The ship personnel couldn't have been more
accommodating and Susan was able to go on shore at 3 out of 4 of the
stops.
I took nature shore trips, 2 of them in glass bottom or semi
sub type boats in order to see the sea floor. We are already researching
and talking about our next cruise!
My plans for
summer will start on May 22 with a drive to Niles, MI in time for a
grandson's HS graduation. After a visit there, I'll find a way over to St.
Charles, IL in time for a Texas getaway with daughter Dona.
After returning I hopefully will finally get to stay home and just relax. I am
supposed to be retired, you know.
Which
all reminds me that it is past time for me to retire. Consider this note
DONE. Have a Blessed Easter! Fondly, Pat
June
2004: I
am
at
my
summer
address
right
now.
Last
week-end
was
spent
at
Fort
Riley,
Kansas
with
a
grandson
(recently
returned
from
Iraq)
and
his
wife
and
baby,
Josh
and
Heather
Eggar
and
baby
Emma,
6
months.
She's
my
2nd
great
grandchild.
It
was
a
fun
time
and
Josh
took
me
for
a
spin
in
his
new
bright
yellow
jeep.
Of
course,
that
was
nothing
compared
to
the
tank
ride
his
Dad
experienced.
Now
I
have
a
week
to
regroup
and
fly
to
Fiji
for
a
vacation.
It's
a
working
trip
for
my
son-in-law
and
the
rest
of
us
can
swim
and
snorkel
and
sun.
This
is
my
4th
trip
there
as
daughter
and
son-in-law
Dona
and
Jack
were
missionaries
there.
Thanks
for
keeping
our
class
straightened
out
if
that
is
possible!

August,
2003
Update:
It
is
less
than
one
week
until
the
Class
of
'48
reunion
and
I
will
not
be
able
to
attend.
So
here
is
a
rundown
of
significant
events
since
the
last
reunion.
My
dear
husband
Jack
had
a
heart
attack
and
went
to
be
with
his
Savior
and
Lord
on
Dec.
15,
1998.
I
remained
in
our
home
in
Gambrills,
Maryland
until
Sept.
of
2002.
At
that
time
I
made
a
double
move;
The
winter
half
of
me
lives
in
a
condo
in
Lakeland,
Florida,
a
couple
of
doors
from
son
David
and
his
wife
Susan.
We
see
one
another
frequently
and
enjoy
the
warmth
of
Florida.
I'm
getting
settled
in
a
wonderful
church
and
am
loving
the
birds
that
frequent
Lake
Parker
right
in
front
of
the
condos.
In
January,
David
and
I
traveled
to
Maura
Teweh,
Borneo,
Indonesia,
to
visit
daughter
Diane
and
her
family.
She
and
her
husband
Scott
were
just
finishing
their
term
as
missionaries
there.
The
4
boys
were
home
from
boarding
school
and
we
played
with
them
and
adsorbed
the
totally
different
culture
for
a
month
before
touring
some
cities
in
the
island
of
Java.
I
had
only
been
home
a
couple
of
weeks
when
I
stepped
in
a
sink
hole
in
the
grass
as
I
was
returning
from
a
bird
walk
so
I
spent
the
next
6
weeks
healing
from
a
broken
wrist.
When
the
cast
was
taken
off
I
did
lots
of
my
own
therapy
and
am
still
working
to
regain
strength.
However,
I
am
so
very
grateful
to
God
that
it
has
healed
so
well.
Then
there
were
about
2
weeks
before
it
was
time
to
drive
north
with
my
granddaughter,
Jess,
in
order
to
spend
the
summer
in
St.
Charles,
Illinois,
where
daughter
Dona
and
family
live
in
a
home
with
a
special
first
floor
wing
for
me.
b
was
married
to
b
on
June
13th.
My
side
of
the
family
stayed
for
a
mini
family
reunion
afterwards.
That
time
was
a
blur
of
activity.
Then
we
had
about
2
days
to
prepare
for
traveling
to
an
Eggar
wedding
in
Texas,
picking
up
my
granddaughter-in-law
on
the
way.
She
and
grandson
Josh
live
in
Ogden,
Kansas.
First
Lt.
Josh
is
presently
in
Baghdad
helping
in
the
restoration
process.
AND
they
are
expecting
their
first
baby
which
will
be
my
second
great
grandchild.
Once
home
here
in
St.
Charles,
we
readied
for
a
trip
to
the
Montreal
River
in
Canada
where
an
AWANA
camp
is
built
out
in
the
wilderness.
Now
I
am
back
in
one
piece
and
in
one
place
until
early
September
when
I
plan
to
drive
back
to
Florida.
So
the
first
year
of
this
phase
of
my
life
is
almost
over.
It
is
exciting
to
live
close
to
family
and
be
a
part
of
their
lives
and
hopefully
I
can
be
a
help
to
them.
They
certainly
are
a
blessing
from
the
Lord
to
me.
I
am
grateful
to
be
able
to
enjoy
an
exciting
and
active
life,
but
sorry
that
I
can't
join
you
for
the
55th
reunion.
Pat |
October 2002: I
wanted
to
let
people
know
I've
relocated
to
a
condo
in
Lakeland,
Florida
near
some
of
my
family.
My
house
in
Maryland
where
I
have
lived
for
the
last
16
years
sold
in
one
day
and
the
closing
date
was
set
for
a
late
summer
move
to
Florida
and
Illinois.
In
May,
I
finished
Bible
Study
Fellowship,
a
weekly
study
that
has
been
an
important
part
of
my
life
since
'81,
giving
me
time
to
embark
on
some
interesting
trips.
I
had
a
delightful,
educational
and
fun
get
away
on
an
Elder
Hostel
to
Chincoteague,
Virginia.
Then
it
was
out
to
Bartlett,
Illinois
for
the
graduation
of
granddaughter
Bekah.
She
was
5th
in
her
H.S.
class
making
us
all
proud
of
her.
She
is
now
attending
The
Master's
College
in
California.
On
another
memorable
trip
I
joined
other
friends
for
our
Monmouth
College,
Illinois,
50th
reunion.
The
events
were
well
planned
and
we
returned
with
many
memories
and
renewed
freshman
friendships.
Pat,
|
June
2001:
I
plan
to
attend
my
grandson's
graduation
from
USMMA
in
NY.
Josh
is
the
first
of
my
10
grandchildren
to
graduate
from
college.
Have
a
great
day
in
the
Lord.
In
Christ,
Pat |
April,
2001:
I
went
on
a
Greek
Island
cruise
which
was
to
include
Israel
but
the
Captain
and
Company
made
the
decision
not
to
unload
a
shipfull
of
people
in
Israel.
The
trip
was
worthwhile
without
it
as
we
saw
Athens,
Egypt,
Turkey
(Istanbul
and
old
Ephesus)
and
many
other
Biblical
sites
along
the
way.
I
am
just
about
to
sign
up
for
a
trip
for
2
weeks
that
will
be
nothing
but
Israel
and
think
that
this
will
be
better
as
we
will
see
it
in
more
depth.
The
trip
is
in
November
and
is
co-sponsored
by
AWANA,
so
my
daughter
and
son-in-law
will
be
going
which
makes
it
nice
for
a
single
tagalong.
Also
in
December
I
took
a
trip
to
Florida
with
a
friend.
We
zigzagged
back
and
forth
doing
some
visiting
and
sight-seeing
on
the
way.
I
have
a
1st
great-granddaughter
as
of
November
18th,
so
got
to
see
her.
Last
fall
I
was
asked
to
go
back
into
leadership
with
BSF
and
if
you
know
anything
about
the
group,
it
is
a
time
commitment
that
disciplines
the
rest
of
your
life.
So
since
Christmas
I
have
actually
stayed
home.
It
looks
as
if
my
summer
is
pretty
well
planned.
My
grandson
Josh
graduates
from
the
USMMA
in
June
and
gets
married
in
July.
I
am
signed
up
for
Sandy
Cove
Bible
Conference
in
August.
My
"kids"
in
Indonesia
are
doing
great.
Scott
is
trying
to
get
a
new
school
building
underway.
Anyway,
I
am
still
here
and
trying
to
live
for
the
Lord.
In
Him,
Pat |
August,
2000:
Since
the
homegoing
of
my
husband,
Jack,
I
have
led
a
whirlwind
of
a
life,
thanks
to
wonderful
family
and
friends.
Because
my
daughter
Diane
was
home
from
Indonesia
for
13
months,
June
1,
99
to
June
30,
00,
I
took
every
opportunity
to
spend
time
with
her
and
her
family
of
4
lively
boys.
In
fact,
I
have
done
lots
of
traveling
to
be
with
my
3
families
and
am
so
grateful
that
they
actually
want
me
to
visit.
Sometimes
there
was
a
bit
of
an
ulterior
motive
(maybe
on
both
parts)
and
I
stayed
with
grandkids,
giving
the
parents
a
chance
to
be
away
together.
We
had
2
family
reunions,
both
highly
successful.
The
first
was
at
Sandy
Cove,
MD,
a
Bible
Conference
Lodge
where
Jack
regularly
gave
financial
seminars.
The
second
was
at
Carter
Caves,
KY,
where
we
had
camped
some
35
years
ago.
I
surprised
myself
by
going
all
the
way
through
the
unlit
and
very
slippery
and
rocky
"Bat
Cave"
and
was
grateful
that
I
could
still
do
it.
Then
there
have
been
some
trips.
I
went
to
Mexico
in
February
on
an
AWANA
trip,
and
to
New
England
in
June
with
a
group
of
seniors.
Right
now
I
am
anticipating
a
visit
from
daughter
Dona
and
her
2
teen
girls.
We
will
then
drive
to
NC
to
son
David's
for
the
wedding
of
yet
another
granddaughter.
Then
it
will
be
out
to
Bartlett,
IL
with
Dona's
family.
I
am
planning
to
get
together
with
some
college
friends
out
there,
one
of
whom
I
haven't
seen
since
I
left
school.
Future
plans
include
a
Holy
Land
cruise
in
October.
(Anybody
want
to
join
me?)
In
between
all
this
jaunting,
I
try
to
keep
the
bills
paid
and
keep
up
with
friends
here.
However,
this
past
week
I
did
my
civic
duty
and
served
as
foreman
of
a
jury
in
a
civil
case
which
lasted
6
days.
It
was
a
difficult
case
and
I
feel
better
informed
in
an
entirely
new
way.
Today
I
am
awaiting
the
arrival
of
some
of
the
NC
family.
They
are
starting
housekeeping
and
I
am
paring
down
for
the
eventual
day
that
I
move
from
this
house,
much
too
large
for
one
person,
but
I
enjoy
it
here
and
am
staying
for
now.
In Christ, Pat
|
August,
1999,
note:
I
had
a
very
full
summer.
First
a
17
yr.
old
granddaughter
came
to
spend
the
summer
and
work
in
the
area.
Then
we
had
a
fabulous
family
reunion
at
Sandy
Cove,
the
Bible
Conference
Center
where
Jack
gave
weekly
financial
seminars
for
the
past
7
summers.
Some
of
the
family
couldn't
bear
to
go
home,
so
they
came
here
early
and
stayed
another
week
afterwards.
And
a
third
family
came
at
the
end
of
August
for
a
Wash. D.C.
week
of
sightseeing
and
seeing
old
friends.
By
this
time
I
needed
a
break,
so
went
back
to
Sandy
Cove
with
a
friend
for
a
week.
Now
I
am
home
for
a
month
before
heading
off
on
another
trip.
Meanwhile,
I
try
to
sort
through
the
paperwork
that
I'm
blessed
to
have
to
cope
with.
Otherwise
I
would
be
on
the
Government
dole!

PAT ACOSTA'S BIOGRAPHY
After
graduating
from
Mt.L
H.S.,
I
attended
Monmouth
College
in
IL
for
one
and
a
half
semesters
before
transferring
to
Penn
State
where
I
met
Jack.
I
graduated
in
ED
two
years
after
he
graduated
in
C
&
F.
We
married
that
same
month
-
June
28,
1952
(46
years)
&
moved
to
Lancaster,
PA.
Jack
was
already
working
there.
I
taught
Kindergarten.
for
a
year
before
we
started
a
family
-
first
Dona,
(Mrs.
Jack
Eggar
-
four
children):
then
David
(Susan,
two
children)
and
finally
Diane
(Mrs.
Scott
Riggenbach
-
four
children).
Jack
was
transferred
about
and
changed
jobs,
too,
so
we
have
lived
in
eight
states
in
eleven
homes.
We
have
been
in
our
present
house
for
12
years,
the
longest
that
we
have
stayed
anywhere.
It
does
help
to
be
"retired".
Throughout
my
years
I
taught
briefly
in
the
IL
school
system,
but
mostly
did
volunteer
work.
After
becoming
a
Christian,
I
became
involved
in
Church
work
and
found
my
real
love
in
Bible
Studies.
Today
I
have
backed
off
in
order
to
be
free
to
take
care
of
my
Mom,
help
with
Jack's
ministries
and
visit
family.
We
do
attend
and
participate
in
a
great
local
church.
Recently
we
hosted
a
missionary
couple
from
Mexico.
We
love
being
involved
in
peoples'
lives
and
have
a
special
burden
for
missionaries
since
our
own
children
have
been
missionaries
in
foreign
lands.
We
have
visited
them
enough
to
know
what
it
is
like.
Our
daughter
Dona
&
husband
ministered
in
Fiji
for
about
20
years.
He
started
a
Baptist
work
there
and
has
turned
it
over
to
another
man.
He
is
now
the
International
Director
for
AWANA,
a
children's
program
for
church
use.
We
visited
them
in
Bartlett,
IL
right
after
our
summer
series
ended.
Our
son
David
lives
in
Burlington,
NC
where
he
is
in
his
own
business,
having
left
the
pastorate
last
year.
His
wife
has
MS
and
is
needing
more
and
more
help
so
he
works
out
of
his
home.
Daughter,
Diane,
is
a
CMA
missionary
in
the
interior
of
Borneo,
Indonesia.
She
teaches
at
a
small
seminary
while
her
husband
supervises
the
native
pastors
in
Central
and
South
Kalimantan.
Those
are
2
of
the
5
"states"
of
Borneo.
We
have
been
to
Indonesia
3
times,
but
the
last
visit
may
be
our
final
one
as
it
is
a
hard,
demanding
trip
and
the
heat
is
oppressive.
The
older
we
get,
the
more
we
mind
it.
They
are
due
back
in
the
states
in
June
for
a
one
year
furlough.
At
that
time
we
are
planning
a
family
reunion.
Jack
left
his
business
career
early
because
of
repeated
heart
troubles,
but
the
Lord
has
blessed
him
in
making
him
useful
to
many
with
his
Christian
Financial
Counseling
and
seminars.
For
that
I
am
most
grateful!

McIlvane Casey, apparently from liver complications associated with
Hepatitis C.
Roseanne
and I go way back to Junior High days when she moved to Colony
Circle, two houses away from me. Her death brings back many memories of good times together including her
being a brides maid in our wedding 53 years ago. When I last saw
Roseanne
2 years ago at a small gathering of "old" '48
friends, she seemed fine -- just as witty and enthusiastic as ever.
That's how I'll always remember her. Barry and I continue contented Cape Codders.
Barry happy with his
artificial hip and still playing racquetball and yours truly seeing
without glasses (except for reading) after cataract surgery.
We're grateful for good health, and hope you and your family are enjoying
the same. Barbara Adams Norris |

It
reminds
me
of
the
old
Russian
joke:
Ivan
is
walking
down
the
rainy,
windswept
street
late
at
night.
Suddenly,
there
is
a
brilliant
flash
of
flames!
Satan
appears!
He
cocks
his
finger
at
Ivan,
and
cackles,
"Ivan,
I
want
a
word
with
you."
Ivan
takes
one
look,
races
up,
embraces
Satan,
and
kisses
him
on
the
mouth.
Satan
is
unnerved
by
what
has
happened.
He
recoils
and
says,
"Ivan,
what
in
Hell
is
the
matter
with
you?
I
am
Satan,

Ivan
replies
with
joy,
"At

February 22, 2005 (Editor's note: Received in June
- Marty typed her letter in some fancy script that was very difficult to
scan so I take no credit for misinterpretations.)
Dear Bill, I have been trying to get a letter written and a
picture sent for so long! Finally just ran off a roll of film with
somewhat dire results, but you can use "Whatever" and ignore "Whichever."
(See below)
We attended a huge, five-day India(n) wedding in Lake
Charles, ,CA., that was beautifully done and amazing. It started in
the am. and almost met itself late each night. The bride, groom and
families and guests must have real endurance. Knowing what goes into
"normal" planning, it was overwhelming.
We were
invited to the Inaugural and thought it would be a great experience.
(It was.) We hate being cold, and haven't had snow here since Feb. of
2004. But there we got to "enjoy" what we had been missing. It
was very interesting. We've made up for two warm winters and a cool
summer with many hail storms. Wow we have to replace our roof.
Bill was invited to the Masters at Augusta the Sunday
Tiger won the green jacket again. I wasn't invited, so went to the
Lake for a few days and saw it from there.
The last
two years have been pretty boring as I stirred up an old injury to my neck
and shoulder and spend two hours, every other day, in PT. It kind of
limits your 'fun" time. Also, it bothers me to fly. The
traveler!! Frustrating. As you can see, I do go from time to time, but
don't think I could handle overseas at present. Bummer.
One daughter is the traveler we used to be. She is in
China for 3 weeks right now. YPO meetings, plus business calls.
On an earlier trip, she fell down the rough steps in Machu Picchu and broke
her leg. She has such a high pain threshold that she didn't realize it
and went back up twice. They are having the first national touring of
all of their artifacts here in Tulsa right now and we plan to go.
Guess for now it is the only way I will get there.
You seem to be feeling wonderful, and that is great. Take care of
yourself. I still visit the MtL site frequently. Right now l am
going to print this and mail it, with said pix. if I don't it will
never get done. Marty

Having
all
of
our

in
Tulsa
is
great,
but
we
do
get
heavily
involved
in
their
problems

successes.
Also
the
business
commitment
dictates
our
schedule
and
long
hours.
Our
middle

has
taken
over
most
of
the
heavy
overseas

as
she

it

it

She

The

So
she

The

was
lengthy
because
of

but
we
did
make
our

and
drove
up
the
coast
to
Venice
in
the

of
the
nightluckily
having
our

us.
Very
coincidentally
we
ran
into
an
old

from
Pitt
who
was
in
our

party
at
Heinz
Chapel.
They
have
lived
in
Venice
for

years.
Then

night
and
then

My

We
didnt
even
get
a
chance
to
call
them.
I
had
no
opportunity
to
see
where
the
Floridian
48ers
live.
Another
person
grabbed
the
same
bag
on
our
return,
but
I
was
watchful
and
was
able
to
run
after
him
and
retrieve
it.
Next

Thought
I
had

more
recently.
I
have
appreciated
the
flurry
of
recent
mail.
Enjoy
visiting
the
site
as
it
grows.
Time
flies
(profound,
yes?).
Until
two
years
ago
I
was
unable
to
say
the
"6"
word.
Now
in
a
few
months
it
will
be
the
"7"
word.
It's
not
vanity;
won't
come
out
of
my
mouth.
It's
nice
to
know
we
all
have
this
common
bond.
At
Bill's
50th
(and
first)
reunion
he
saw
a
group
of
"early
arrivers"
at
a
large
table
and
was
rushing
to
join
them.
He
was
greatly
shocked
when
I
said,
"Bill,
it
looks
like
those
people
are
celebrating
their
10th."
Our
youngest
daughter
was
married
February
26th.
She
insisted
Bill
and
I
walk
down
the
aisle
on
either
side
of
her
and
"give
her
away"
together.
It
felt
strange
but
was
a
very
loving
thing.
We
had
the
rehearsal
dinner
here
(40
people),
the
wedding
at
the
church
the
next
day,
followed
(I
thought)
by
a
fairly
large
reception
at
the
club.
Bill
and
I
were
so
exhausted
that
we
went
to
the
lake
for
over
two
weeks
to
refresh.
We
"visit"
our
lake
place
infrequently
because
of
time,
and
knew
that
going
in.
But
I
didn't
figure
on
how
strongly
it
would
keep
calling
me.
It
wants
to
keep
me
there.
Last
year
was
our
special
anniversary
(50th)
year
and
we
made
it
very
special.
Amazingly,
our
51st
Anniversary
flew
by
in
June.
I
am
hoping
for
another
lake
trip
in
November
and
it's
marked
out
on
Bill's
calendar
everywhere.
If
anyone
wants
to
do
good
works,
they
can
send
him
an
e-mail
(to
me--I'm
not
sure
he'd
admit
it
if
it
went
direct)
suggesting
the
wonders
of
retirement
(no
negatives,
please).
He
could
start
with
8
hour
days,
maybe
4
days
a
week
and
no
weekends
and
follow
a
continuing
withdrawal
program.
Any
help
would
be
appreciated.
Julian
had
a
very
educating
letter.
I
thought
an
ultra light
was
something
you
ate.
I
am
in
the
middle
of
sorting
/
tossing
pictures
/
photos
from
ancestors
to
present.
What
a
mess
with
all
of
the
pictures
I
have
taken
over
the
years.
Right
now
I
can't
find
a
recent
one
of
Bill
and
myself.
Normally
I
am
the
picture-taker
and
not
often
in
the
picture.
But
will
send
one
later.
Letter
from
Marty
-
August
1999: Bill,
have
many
messages
from
you,
but
my
computer
was
either
being
updated,
or
we
were
out
of
town.
I
couldn't
even
write
a
letter
and
print
it
out.
Longhand
is
gone
forever
for
me.
Hope
the
MtL
web site
is
still
ongoing.
Think
it
is
so
neat.
This
is
our
50th
Anniversary
year.
Husband,
Bill,
did
a
neat
thing
-
he
sent
me
10
red
roses
and
a
lovely
4-page
letter
covering
our
1st
10
years.
And
now
I
get
10
more
red
roses
until
it
totals
50--and
also
4
more
letters
for
each
of
the
last
10
years.
With
Bill's
long
hours
and
years
of
working,
I
thought
4
two-week
vacations
would
be
wonderful
this
year:
-
First, trip to Hawaii in February. Fabulous.
-
Second to the lake in late May, but
Bill couldn't get away, so I went alone--with my Westie. That was refreshing.
-
June 16th our girls had a wonderful and unusual Anniversary celebration. Complete surprise, very special and unusual.
-
June 26 we left for an Alaskan Cruise, so wonderfully cool--and no rain. Had a ball. Great accommodations, food, food, food, something to do every minute, and we did it all except sleep. Danced into the wee hours.
-
Then home for catch-up.
One
daughter
is
building
a
home;
one
daughter
is
selling
hers
and
moving.
The
youngest
has
had
a
long-distance
romance
for
two
years
and
just
moved
here
this
week.
Overload.
I
like
having
them
all
in
town
now,
but
one
does
get
involved.
Bill
has
lost
30
lbs.
and
looks
great.
He
was
6'
and
160
when
we
met.
My
weight
hasn't
changed
an
iota.
So
he's
now,
shooting
to
lose
5
more
lbs.
I
get
tired
of
planes,
but
we
go
to
Pittsburgh
2
days
in
September,
then
to
our
plant
in
Oil
City.
Used
to
go
to
Oil
City
once
a
month
when
I
was
totally
involved
in
work,
but
haven't
been
there
for
four
years.
You're
the
first
I
have
tried
to
communicate
with
due
to
computer
problems
or
being
gone.
Eager
to
contact
others.
We've
been
all
over
the
world
and
lived
many
places
in
U.S.,
but
a
list
of
that
wouldn't
be
interesting.
I'll
try
to
find
some
more
pictures
of
us
from.
You
can
use
them
or
not.
Don't
want
to
overdo
it....

8th
Grade
Bill,
Sorry to hear the news about
Jack Ross. He
always was a nice guy in high school. I'm getting along OK and my
ankle fusion over 8 months ago is doing fine and the knee
replacement 11 weeks ago is also doing just fine. I walk around the
house easily but when I go out, take my cane along for extra safety
around curbs etc. Tomorrow I see the Dr. to advise about a
shoulder replacement. Nothing like a major rehab with three new
body parts! Tom - May 2009
October 2008 - I got the cast off 4 weeks
ago and I am getting along fairly well. The right leg and foot has
some swelling and I'm wearing a compression stocking. Since my
left knee needs a replacement, when I go out I walk with a cane for
stability. I see my Dr. on Nov. 14 and he may clear me to schedule
the knee replacement as all the cartilage is gone and it's bone on
bone. I guess that those of us who survive 60 years after high
school, usually need body part replacements. But, I can't complain
and I have more to think about than my health.......the stock
market..........who will be the next president, etc. I hope
you're getting along OK and thanks for inquiring about my ankle
recovery. Tom
Bob
& Bill, Well it's just three days to go to the big event and
many will start the celebrating on Friday. Naturally, I would like
to be there but Mt. Lebanon is too far to travel in a wheelchair.
Even though I will miss the event, because of my involvement the
past 3 1/2 months with both of you in planning and finding
classmates, I can take great satisfaction in being a part of the
reunion. When I started the beginning of May, never in my wildest
dreams would I have estimated I could find so many classmates. But
as I proceeded finding a few, it became almost an obsessive
challenge to find more and the results are that
Bill
now
manages probably the most complete and best high school class
website on the internet. With
Bob
and his committee
planning, I'm sure the reunion will be a big success. In recalling
the attendees list, I knew most of them, but the only ones I've
stayed in contact with are
Don and
Mary Lou
Martin. Tom
- August 2008
I had my
appointment with the Dr. today and he said everything looks good.
He took an x-ray which shows a 13" titanium rod going thru the heal
bone and up into the tibia. There are several screws which hold the
rod in place going thru the ankle bones. You'd expect this would
have me in pain, but I have very little. He put on a weight bearing
cast which allows some weight on that leg, but it's a tenuous
beginning and I have to be careful and use a walker when moving
around. It will be awhile before I can put full weight on that leg,
but I'm making progress. The operation usually requires about 6
weeks before being cast-free..- Tom, August 2008
My ankle fusion surgery
was successful and I am currently in a wheel chair. I'm getting
along pretty well without any pain. I see my Dr. this Friday and he
may put me in a walking cast, but that's to be determined.
Recovering from ankle surgery is far easier than I expected
Tom, August 2008
I had the fusion surgery
yesterday and it went OK, but I have to be off it for 10 days and
I'm trying to negotiate various walkers, but it's a challenge plus I
have to take pain pills. I now have a 12" rod up thru the heal bone
and into my tibia plus a few screws to hold things in place while
the bones fuse.. Much to my wife, Carolyn's, displeasure, I've
moved my computer up to the family room. She doesn't understand the
agony of not having computer access. Tom, August 2008
Bob
and Bill, Just so you can see
who you're dealing with these days, here's a photo taken on Memorial
Day after about 150 hours on the internet looking for classmates.
Now that another 6 weeks has gone bye, my overall feeling is one of
satisfaction with our efforts in finding people, but there have been
a few frustrations along the way. In the photo, not sure if the
facial expression is one of satisfaction, frustration or tiredness.
Tom
From
Bill Erdman,
WebMaster: It should be one of satisfaction for many jobs, well
done. Tom did an outstanding job of searching for our
missing Classmates. Without his help we would have had over
100 "Lost" Classmates - He single-handedly (With a little bitty help
from Mary Murrie) whittled the list down to 26 in 2 months of
mind-numbing work!. Thanks, Tom
June 2008 - I guess our
memories of high school and the fun we had with classmates back then
and later at reunions is not shared by everyone as reflected in some
of the feedback we receive occasionally. Out of 370+ classmates, it is
not unusual for a few to feel this way. I recall from the 25th
reunion, I had a few of the students from Castle Shannon mention
they never felt like they fit in with the Mt. Lebanon kids. I
suggest we just respect other's feelings and not bother them for
another 5 years. Tom
May 2008: On the
Sunday "60 Minutes" program, they had a whole segment on Mt. Lebanon
HS. It regarded the current epidemic of the staph infection, MRSA,
mostly among students. Leslie Stahl was there and interviewed
people including 2 football players. There were good shots of the
school, football field, etc.
May 2007 in response to
Jack McCune's death:
It certainly was sad
news to hear about
Jack's
death. Jack
and I enlisted in the army together in the summer of 1952 for 3 years. We
went to infantry basic training at Indiantown Gap near Harrisburg and then
spent 14 months at the Counter Intelligence school outside Baltimore. We
learned how to be "counter spies" then spent 6 months in German language
school and 6 weeks in investigative photography and microfilming. Jack
and I made numerous weekend trips between Baltimore and Pittsburgh in my
1939 Chrysler! We then went to Germany and
Jack was assigned to Stuttgart
and I to Berlin. I had a good time in my 3 year army experience made
all the more enjoyable by being with
Jack
most of the time. He really was a great guy.
Tom
January 2007:
The lack
of correspondence from me is because very little has changed in my life the
past several years other than now going up and down stairs one-at-a-time.
We need to move into a ranch but with 30 years of accumulation, I need to
order a dumpster first. We have merged 6 United Ways in Northwest
Cook county and I still serve on this board which raises over $2.5 million
for allocation to 57 agencies. We haven't taken a trip in 18 mos. and
mostly sit and watch TV and become disgusted with the news from Iraq. Carolyn says I'm partially to blame because I voted for
Bush! Cheers, Tom
January 2006: Bill, I
haven't visited the website in several months. On it today, I noted
some people listed as lost and I went about my web search with results on
Lloyd B
Bartholow (Deceased),
Charles A.
Coltman
and
David Guyol
In investigation of further details, all are listed as
approximate age 75. My guess is these are our guys.
I leave it up to you if you want to phone
and confirm they are our lost members.
As I've mentioned before, some classmates
may want to be lost and have little interest in our website. I do recall
that Lloyd was at the 45th reunion.
Tom
February 2005: You may have seen this before and I
also know it is more "endearing" to those that don't live in Pittsburgh
anymore. I never tire of this. My favorite, although not listed below is
. . . jaeatyet? no jew? . . . meaning "have you eaten yet? No I haven't.
Have you?" This type of dialog can take all sort of turns from here. For
instance the reply could be. Na, I wuz thinkin bout goin up street for a
hoagie and some pop but they ran out of pokes to put em in. So they're
using saran wrap and gum bands. Yenz wana come with me? (Yenz is the
plural of yunz)
Ah yes! "Picksburgh." Yunz are from Picksburgh if . .
You didn't have a spring break in high school. You walk carefully when it
is "slippy" outside. You often go down to the "crick." You've told your
children to "red up" their rooms. You can remember telling your little
brother / sister to stop being so "nebby." You've gotten hurt by falling
into a "jaggerbush." Your mother or grandmother has been seen wearing a
"babushka" on her head. You've "warshed" the clothes. I ask you to hand
me one of those "Gum-Bands" you actually know what I'm talking about. You
know you can't drive too fast on the back roads, because of the deer.
You
know Beaver Valley, Turtle Creek, Moon, Mars, Slippery Rock, Greentree and
New Castle are names of towns. (and you've been to most, if not all, of
them.) A girl walks up to three of her girl friends and says, HEY YENZ
GUYS." You hear "you guyses," and don't think twice. (Example..."you guyses house is nice") You know the three rivers by name and understand
that "The Point" isn't just on a writing instrument. Someone refers to
"The Mon" or "The Yough" and you know exactly what they're talking about. You remember the blizzard of 1994 (or 1976, or 1939, or...) and remember
not being able to go outside because the snow was over your head and you
would have suffocated. Someone starts the chant, "Here we go Still-ers!"
and you join in. In the proper cadence. Waving the appropriately colored
towel.
Bob Prince and "There's a bug loose on the rug." hold special
meaning for you. You've either eaten a Farkleberry Tart or know someone
who has. You drink pop, eat hoagies, love perogies and one of your
favorite sandwiches actually has french fries ON it. You know what a
"still mill" is. You expect temps in the winter to be record breaking cold
and temps in the summer to be record breaking hot. You know what Eat 'N
Park is and frequently ate breakfast there at 2:00 AM after the bar closed
and made fun of people. You order "dippy eggs" in a restaurant and get
exactly what you wanted. You spent your summers, or a school picnic, at Kennywood, Sand Castle, or Idlewild. You've been to the Braun's Bread
Plant or Story Book Forest for a school field trip.
"Chipped ham" was
always in your refrigerator when you were growin up. You refuse to buy any
condiments besides Heinz unless a Pittsburgh athlete's picture is on the
side of the container. Franco, Roberto, and Mario don't need last names
and you can recite their exploits by heart. Your last name has 8 or more
letters in it (and you either have a 'Z,' 'U' or a 'ski' somewhere in
there) and nobody can pronounce it. And oft times, even if your name has
fewer letters, folks still can't pronounce it. Food at a wedding reception
consists of rigatoni, stuffed cabbage, sauerkraut and polska kielbasa.
Send this on to family and friends who used to live in the Pittsburgh Area
as well as to those who have never lived there, just so they can
appreciate how different western PA really is! I wonder how many of Yunz
guys actually understood all dat? Some folks just don't get dem things.

Concerning
our

I
expect
most are
aware
of

those

and
the
possibility

rather
remote.

Claire

and
lived
in

with
three

There
is
no
listing
for
Claire
or
James
Deuble,
but
there
is
a
Eraina
Deuble,
4505
Berkshire
Dr.
Warren,

44484
(330)
609-6943.
Possibly
her

There
are
lots
of

so
this
may
be
a
long
shot,
but
it
is
her
last
name
in
town
where
she
lived.
Not
sure
how
much
you
are
doing
with
the
website
these
days,
(everything
I
can,
Tom)
but
I
pass
this
along
for
whatever
it's
worth.
If
you're
talking
with
Bob
Woeber,
I'd
say
trying
to
have
a
55th
reunion
is
a
stretch
and
may
not
be
worth
the
effort.
The
ranks
are
dwindling
and
many
of
those
still
alive
are
not
in
Pittsburgh
and
not
inclined
to
travel.
I
didn't
make
the
50th
and
it's
unlikely
I'd
be
there
for
55.
I
think
the
website
is
a
great
way
to
stay
in
touch and
only
wish
a
few
more
were
using
it.
I
guess
those
not
on
it
fall
into
three
groups:
those
who
aren't
aware
of
it,
those
who aren't
on
the
internet
and
those
who
don't
care.
Happy
New
Year, Tom
August
15,
2000:
One
of
the
downsides
of
being
a
reporter
(or
WebMaster)
is
sometimes
you
have
to
report
very
sad
news
such
as
the
death
of
a
very
dear,
sweet
person
which
all
agree
Kash
was.
Not
that
it
will
totally
restore
your
cheerfulness,
I
thought
I
might
share
a
bit
of
a
more
upbeat
story.
Since
you
seem
to
be
fascinated
that
I
was
an
Intelligence
Officer
(oxymoron,
as
you
say),
I
decided
to
relate
how
this
came
about.
When
we
graduated
in
1952,
our
education
exemptions
expired
and
we
would
be
drafted.
All
I
knew
was
I
didn't
want
to
end
up
in
the
Infantry.
My
uncle
(one
who
lives
in
Daytona
Beach)
had
been
in
the
Army
Counter
Intelligence
Corps
(CIC)
in
WW
II
and
suggested
it
was
a
great
place
to
spend
your
military
obligation,
although
it
required
enlisting
for
3
years,
which
I
ended
up
doing.
When
the
enlistees
gathered
for
transport
to
the
induction
center,
there
was
John
McCune
who
was
doing
the
same
thing.
We
struggled
through
16
weeks
of
infantry
basic
training
at
Indiantown
Military
Reservation
outside
Harrisburg
and
when
this
battalion
of
800
graduated
basic
training,
792
got
orders
for
Korea:
John
and
I
went
to
Fort
Holabird
in
a
Baltimore
suburb
for
our
CIC
training.
Our
training
at
Ft.
Holabird
consisted
of
16
weeks
of
investigation
schooling
and
then
6
months
of
German
language
followed
by
8
weeks
of
investigative
photography
and
microfilming.
One
Sunday
in
1953,
lying
on
our
bunks
with
the
Baltimore
Sun,
we
read
about
the
big
Crissman-Funkhouser
society
wedding
and
wondered
if
Peggy
knew
we
were
in
town
defending
our
country,
would
we
have
gotten
invites?
Finally
in
March
1954,
the
Army
decided
we
were
ready
to
be
turned
loose
in
Europe
as
counter-spies!!
CIC
headquarters
in
Europe
was
in
Stuttgart
and
when
we
reported,
I
was
assigned
to
Berlin
and
Jack
stayed
in
Stuttgart.
I
wondered
how
I
got
Berlin
and
Jack
didn't
and
then
I
learned
the
Colonel
in
charge
at
Stuttgart
wanted
the
CIC
basketball
team
to
win,
so
naturally
he
kept
Jack
there.
As
for
being
and
Intelligence
Officer (Tom, isn't this an oxymoron?),
I
wasn't.
Although
I
held
a
reserve
commission,
I
never
activated
it
which
would
have
extended
my
service,
so
I
was
a
corporal.
However,
CIC
agents
wore
civilian
clothes,
so
most
people
who
knew
me
casually
in
Berlin,
assumed
I
was
CIA.
I
even
had
an
ID
with
a
cover
name,
Martin
T.
Allyson!
At
the
time,
many
Germans
were
trying
to
immigrate
to
the
US
and
our
office
would
check
the
Nazi
Party
files
at
the
Berlin
Document
Center
and
the
Wehrmacht
files
maintained
by
the
French
in
their
sector
of
Berlin.
In
fact,
in
1954,
it
could
be
more
damaging
to
have
been
an
outspoken
anti-Nazi
as
these
people
were
often
Communists
and
because
of
Joe
McCarthy,
they
were
the
enemy,
not
the
defeated
Nazis.
Then
too,
we
had
the
job
of
turning
down
lots
of
the
Frauleins
who
merely
had
designs
of
immigrating
to
the
land
of
the
big
PX.
In
August
1955,
Ike
was
coming
for
a
big
conference
in
Geneva
and
two
of
his
limos
were
landed
in
Bremerhaven
and
had
to
be
driven
to
Geneva.
Since
the
Secret
Service
drivers
were
not
familiar
with
German
road
signs,
we
had
to
put
CIC
agents
in
each
car,
but
I
was
scheduled
to
return
for
mustering
out,
so
I
missed
that
interesting
duty.
My
16
months
in
Berlin
in
1954-55,
when
it
was
a
little
island
of
freedom
behind
the
Iron
Curtain,
is
slightly
higher
on
my
excitement
scale
than
the
three
years
at
Mt.
Lebanon
High
School
and
I

Hi
Bill, E-mail,
July

observations

There
are
many
who
use
it
and
enjoy
it.
There
are
others
not
on

who
can't
enjoy
it
and
then
there
are
some
who
couldn't
care
less.
I
recall
when
working
on
the
20

25
year
reunions,
we
contacted
a
few
people
who
admitted
they
didn't
have
that
great
an
experience
in
Mt

High
School
and
why
would
they
want
to
relive
some
not
so
great
times.
Fortunately,
they
are
in
the
small
minority.
As
for
the
Reunion Committee,
it
was
always
the
same
dedicated
group
who
planned
and
put
them
together.
The
50

was
just
the
same
as
45

so
I
assume
they
just
slipped
in
the

5

and
figured
no
one
would
notice,
or
care.

February 2008:
I was glad
to hear that there will be a 60th reunion. I hope to be
able to get there.
I'm still
living in Madison, WI ,after 53 years. My kids and grandkids
all live elsewhere so Ii do a bit of traveling to visit. I
also have swimming and weight training classes for the body,
and a philosophy study group and a personal writing group
for the mind. I think it works!
I hope to
be able to get to the reunion. I often think of how lucky
we were to be in that school at that time. I have wonderful

Anyway, I called the phone number in the roster and Jack called me
back. Obviously he never heard about the reunion. He gave me his current

50th
Reunion |
Friends, I am so sorry to have to send my
regrets for the Reunion! No place I would rather be that
week-end. The older I get, the more I realize how lucky I
am to be part of the MT. LEBANON CLASS OF 1948. I will be
there in spirit. Have a great time.
Thanks to all that worked so hard to make it
a success!
John
and I have just celebrated our 54th. Yes, under one roof.
We have 2 sons and one granddaughter. This is the 6th
summer we have gone to our home in Naples, Fla, with Bill
and his daughter. Bill being of the new "breed"--
divorced. Betty Lou Bowen Malm - August 2008
January 2007: HAPPY
HEALTHY NEW YEAR TO YOU AND YOUR WIFE! You are great to do all the
work for "The Elite '48 Group"! Thank you for all your time on this.
I was
shocked and saddened to read of the death of
Sally Fellows O'Conner. Our
friendship goes back to grade school when we played together. Not living in
M.L. any more, I was not good keeping in touch. At the reunions, it was
such fun to see her and she never changed her smile. I think every day is a
blessing.
We
live in Cleveland and spend some time in the winter in Naples, Fla. That is
when John can drag me away from my granddaughter and 2 sons.
Have
fun and thanks for all your fine work!
Betty Lou Bowen Malm
December, 2003: I wish you all a Merry Christmas
and a New Year of good health, much happiness, love and peace.
We are enjoying Cleveland in the Winter. Wind, snow
and cold! Life is fun with our two sons and wonderful granddaughter.
Naples, Fla. will be "calling" soon. Enjoy, Betty Lou

60th Reunion |
February 2008: Hi
Bill, I am glad to get the date of the reunion and I
will definitely plan to attend. The DBC's have been

sure we will coordinate our little reunion with the 60th
class reunion. Thanks for the info--it is good to keep in

Bill, thought you might like to see this
picture that was taken in October at
Suzanne

behind her daughter's house, and the good looking group are
from left. I took the picture. We had a

area.

From
Jeanne Vayda McCallum: We received an
email the other day from Ann Bowman (McClymonds) telling that her
husband Bob died on Nov. 18th after heart surgery. Very sudden and
not expected as it was elective surgery. That's all I know. December
2005
October 2005: The first week of September the annual "DBC"
reunion was held at my home in Lake Barrington, IL, a suburb of Chicago. It
was five days of talking and eating. We spent two days in Chicago seeing
the sights including the new Millennium Park (which is great fun and like no
other park), the Architectural Boat Tour on the Chicago River (a must do)
and a night on the town. We told everyone that would listen who we were and
that we had graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School in 1948. We hope "they"
were impressed!

The
above picture was taken after a long day of touring and shopping so we're
a little worse for the wear. Not bad, considering! Seated: (L to R)

The Late Mr

sent me this belated
e-mail: Cleaning out old email and found this "Louie Bradley"
one to you on Dec. 14th. It never went through, so I'm
trying again, Bob,
Good of you to take the trouble to
locate us. After 11 years AOL dropped me without notice or explanation
last spring. Since I always expected to have my service restored I was
very slow to send out a new address. Thanks again! Louise Bradley
(Thiele)"
June, 2003: Sorry to have taken so long to get back to you. Between spam and a big backlog of unread "humor" I seem to postpone dealing with any email that isn't urgent. Awhile back (when?) I looked through the data you've collected and really enjoyed it. It also made me think that I have lived a very odd life.
For example 5 years ago I settled in Rockville, MD, after spending 3 years in the Peace Corps in Vladivostok, Russia. Next week I'm escorting a group of exchange students home to the Ukraine. Actually my current friends live similar lives and my children think it's normal too. Regards,
