more information to give you about one of our classmates. All I
know about Lloyd's

40th Reunion
June 2008: Deceased:
HERB C. BAUM JR. Herb C. Baum Jr.'s work revolved around houses but his heart was outdoors. His infectious laugh echoed across the ski slopes, the fishing hole and the hunting lodge. And he was more than willing to share his enjoyment with friends and family members. ''He didn't get a son, so (he) always tried to turn (his daughters) into hunters,'' said his eldest daughter, Kathryn Baum Philson of Mt. Lebanon. ''We would go fishing and skiing with him, but we drew the line at going into the woods with a gun. He had many 'adopted' sons who would go hunting with him.'' Herb, who was a mortgage counselor, real estate agent and certified appraiser, died of heart attack Saturday in his Mt. Lebanon home. He was 66. ''He was a surrogate father to me,'' said Greg Woodworth of Franklin Park. ''He had three daughters, and his best friend had three sons, and I was one of the sons. We would all hunt and fish together. He was camp leader and chief cook and bottle washer.'' Both work and recreation were always a family affair for Herb. He gained experience in the real estate business by working for his father's company, the H.C. Baum Agency. He became president of the firm 22 years ago and moved the company from Downtown Pittsburgh to Mt. Lebanon in 1977. Philson later joined her father's company as a real estate agent and certified appraiser. Herb went into semi-retirement in 1995, but still remained active with the business. An uncle taught Herb how to fish and hunt as a youth and he enjoyed the activities all his life. When he was in his 20s, he and wife, Nancy, learned to ski on snow and water. He brought along his daughters and later his grandchildren whenever possible. When he wasn't pursuing these outdoor hobbies, Herb could be found tending his garden or cooking. And often his interests converged. He enjoyed cooking a big breakfast of hash browns, bacon and eggs over easy for his grandchildren before a day of winter skiing in the Laurel Highlands or water skiing at Conneaut Lake. At his hunting camp at Medix Run, Elk County, he was often the one who whipped up dinner. Though always tasty, the meal sometimes was as much an adventure as the hunt itself. ''We never knew what he was putting in the recipe,'' Woodworth said. ''You could be eating venison and you'd swear it was filet mignon. You didn't know unless you asked.'' Woodworth added that part of fun of hunting with Herb was playing practical jokes with him. One running gag that he frequently fell for involved shaving cream in a cigarette lighter. When he would awake for an early morning smoke, Herb would flick the lighter only to have shaving cream squirt all over him. ''He was always good for laugh,'' Woodworth said. Herb was a member of the Greater Pittsburgh Board of Realtors and the National Association of Independent Fee Appraisers. He also was a past president of the Mt. Lebanon Lions Club and of the Mountain Club in Champion. In addition to Philson, Herb is survived by his wife, Nancy; two other daughters, Susan Treacy of Conneaut Lake and Barbara of Mt. Lebanon; a brother James of Athens, Texas; and six grandchildren.
From
Bill Erdman, WebMaster: What a tribute to an obviously
good man. I'm glad to hear about his life in such detail.
It's a shame it was posted here 12 years after his death
From
Bill Erdman, WebMaster: Death comes again in September,
1999. Today I moved
Charlie Huff &
Ed Bidden to this page. It was easier
than saying "Good bye" to
Mary-Francis as I knew her better than I knew Charlie or
Ed. However, it still brought sadness into my day and another
wake-up call to enjoy today and love and forgive everyone. If ever
I said an unkind word or did an unkind thing to you, forgive me and
understand it was from the ignorance of youth not malice. We are
all unique in the sight of God - whoever you understand Him to be - and
we are all loved by someone. Be nice to that someone today!

Activities Play Usher Committee Chairman, Devotions Squad, Lantern, Rifle March 2003: First, I would like to inform you if you don't already know that Virginia Smalley Sweet died last September 2002. Our life has been great - enjoying the amenities of Sun City Center, Fla. Toured Holland, Germany and Belgium last January. Health O.K. but slowing down. Gretel and Bob Braun Barnes
From Bill Erdman, WebMaster: Some days just don't start out well. This morning, before church I turned on my computer so a guest could use it while Kay and I taught Sunday School Class. Simple e-mail from Bob Barnes - "Gretel died on December 30 2005." It's 3:00 in the afternoon now and I'm still trying to digest the news. I remember Gretel well. She was a happy person to be around at a time in my life that wasn't always happy. You remember, don't you? High School was the pits then. Compared to now however, it was a great time to be alive. How times change and how we change. It's good to remember those that smiled with you and spoke kindly to you. Gretel was that type of classmate. Sometimes we have regrets and one I have is that I never took the time to look Gretel and Bob up in Sun City - It's less than 2 hours from Maitland. I just put if off. Too easy to do. Fortunately I can know a little about her from her April, 2003, note - "Happily married over 50 years, 2 daughters, traveled a lot and worked in a meaningful profession."
Thanks Gretel, for being a small part of my
life. I will miss your memory.
Information found by Tom Arganbright, May 2008: Charles Brooke died August 21, 1993 in Payson, AZ. He was an EE and worked out west in CA and CO.
Bill Erdman, WebMaster: Charles was a guy I didn't
understand in high school. I now know he was a genius but then I was too
dumb to realize it. I just wasn't on his level. It sounds like he
was able to use his talents well. Way to go, Charles.
Found by Tom Arganbright, May 2008 at 109 50th Avenue Terrace E, Bradenton, FL 34203-4518 but Bob Woeber learned Charlotte had died in October 25, 2005 which Tom Arganbright confirmed with SS Death Records.
Bill Erdman, WebMaster: I did not know Charlotte at
all but I know that she has been missed by those that were fortunate
enough to really know and love her.

I'm sad that I didn't know more about his life and accomplishments

As Bob Woeber said in his e-mail, "I guess I never get used to these things although I certainly should by now." I can only refer to John Donne's quote, "Now, this bell tolling softly for another, says to me: Thou must die." This is the lead line of John Donne's world famous "Devotions upon Emergent Occasions" . In Bob's honor I've added the full text here.
Hi-Y, Honor Roll, Home Room Basketball, Home Room Vice-President Tom Arganbright reported Harrell's death as July 12, 2005. in Gibsonia, PA. No details available. Bill Erdman, WebMaster: Harrell is another Classmate that I wish I had followed his first 50 years after after high school. He was, as I remember, a friendly, easy-going guy. Obviously intelligent and an athletic. How sad we don't have more memories to include here.
Bill, If you have a 50 or 55th reunion brochure, there is a copy of the commencement program in these and you can check Catherine's middle name (initial). I struggled to get down to my files and verified her middle initial is T, In SS Death Index there is a Catherine T. Donovan, born 1/21/29 and died 10/5/01 in Pittsburgh. >ref="a-b.htm#Arganbright"> Toa> August 2008
Basketball, Football, Track Co-Captain CENTERVILLE - James A. Doubleday, 77, of Centerville, died Aug. 25, 2008, after a brief illness, at Cape Cod Hospital. He was the husband of Kathleen A. (Roeger) Doubleday for 43 years. James was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1930, and was educated at Mount Lebanon High School, where he set state track and field records . He then went on to Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa., earning a degree in industrial engineering. After school, James worked for 45 years as a yacht broker, primarily in Fort Lauderdale and on Cape Cod.
Besides his wife, he is survived by Dawn Marie Power of Florida, Colleen E. Harris of Maine, James W. Doubleday of Maui and Heather E. Roberts of New Hampshire; nine grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Stroke Association National Center, 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX 75231. Kay and I visited with Kathleen Doubleday on September 3rd. She said Jad had died on the 25th of August while sitting at dinner with her. He died suddenly and without pain or trauma. I will provide a picture and more information alter. I find it very difficult to write more than I have at this time. - Bill August 14th - Talked with Kathleen tonight. Jad is coming along well but is facing some time in rehab as he regains more and more strength and mobility. He is broken-hearted that he will miss the Reunion. - Bill Jad Doubleday had another stroke yesterday (August 9th) morning and is in the hospital. August 2008 (From Bob) Jad had a slight stroke in April of 2004. I talked with him on the phone and he said he was doing very well. Bill From Bill Erdman, WebMaster: As Jad and I went on to college at Lehigh together I was fortunate to to be able to interact with him longer than just High School. Jad was just as outgoing and pleasant at Lehigh. Over the year I was able to talk with him occasionally and see him at the 45th Reunion. In High School he was nicknamed, "Twinkle Toes", for his running style. Guys laughed at his small steps but no one could catch him! It was my pleasure to talk with Kathleen a week after his death and to meet his son, James. That was a very moving experience - Looking at James W was like jumping back 60 years and looking at Jad again! The resemblance was breathtaking. Jad,
I miss you.
Information found by Tom Arganbright, May 2008, confirms that George Dulski died June 10, 2002, in Pittsburgh, PA From
Bill Erdman, WebMaster:
Bob Woeber just advised me that George Dulski and
Carl Mastandrea are reported as deceased. I did not know
either one of them very well but I mourn their passing just the same.
Sorry I have so little information to report about them.
From Nancy Staggs, August 2007: Joan and Jack had a very good marriage with five children to keep them busy, but with Joan's usual energy she also finished college, got her teaching degree, and taught in the county school system. Most of her married life was spent in Baltimore. Sadly, Joan died of lymphoma about 11 years ago. She faced that with courage and faith. I'm sure all of her friends miss her just as I do. Nancy The above list constitutes the names of classmates "A, B, C and D" who are known by the Committee to have died or have been "Lost" for more than 10 years. Considerable effort has been made by Bob Woeber and Tom Arganbright to locate all of our classmates.
