Nancy MacBeth
died March 11, 1998 in Harrisburg, PA.
Bill Erdman,
WebMaster: This will be a very tough one to write.
Nancy was a neighbor that I enjoyed great outdoor fun with.
I used to go to her house at every opportunity to play with her and
her friends in their back yard. One day she invited me in for
some lemonade and we started wrestling in the living room.
That was the day I realized that girls were different from boys!
Nancy felt different from the guys I used to wrestle with.
I was so unnerved that I went home early and never went back - Ah
for the naive days when we grew up. Kids today don't have
these earthquake type experiences anymore. They know too much
too soon!
Nancy, I've always wanted to talk
with you to see if you remember that momentous day - I'm sure you
wouldn't have and I probably have been too embarrassed to ask you.. You
are a special person to me.

50th Reunion
I just received my mom's (Pat McCarthy) invite to the 55th reunion. I see on your website it shows mom passed away in March of this year. It was actually on July 17, 2001, when Jesus called her home. She was diagnosed with lung cancer and passed away just 4 weeks later. Her loving family and friends miss her terribly but rest in the assurance that we will be reunited in our next life together.
Her family consists of her wonderful husband, Jim; their 4 children (Jim Jr., Bill, and Sue Fetherlin, and Donna Fetherlin Houser), 1 precious grandchild (Tommy Houser). Her sister, Peggy McCarthy, still resides in Pittsburgh.
Please feel free to contact me if you want additional information.
Sue Fetherlin
From
Bill Erdman, WebMaster: Too soon! Seems like I just wrote about
Virginia Smalley and now
Pat McCarthy. To date we have 74 classmates that we don't have any record of them and 73 listed as deceased! What a loss that we were never able to thank each of them for whatever effect (good or bad) they had on our lives. Like it or not, we were a group on the way to somewhere when we graduated. Almost 55 years later we know just a little about the 245 kids we went to high school with that are still alive. If we assume* that those listed as "lost" are also deceased, 147 out of 379 known graduates are dead - 39%. Over one third of us!
Yep. It sounds morbid but unfortunately its true. Make today count and call your spouse, kids, grandkids and tell them how much they mean to you.
 , March 2003
*Good news before I even up-loaded this page: We "found"
Trudy Albright and
Eleanor Bloom! This shows that my assumption above was incorrect. |
John
F. McCune
Washington,
DC
May 9, 2007John Foster "Jack" McCune, 76, a popular
history teacher and Upper School head at St. Albans School who returned from
retirement to serve as the school's headmaster in the late 1990s, died of
complications from leukemia May 9 at Sibley Memorial Hospital.
During his three decades at the upper Northwest academy
for the sons of Washington's wealthy and elite, Mr. McCune taught,
coached football, basketball and tennis and directed the history department,
international seminars and summer school. He was dean of faculty and
head of college counseling at a school that routinely sends more than a
handful of its graduates to the Ivy League.
Described by colleagues as intelligent and graceful, he
was dubbed "Gentleman Jack" for the value he placed upon courtesy.
"Never, never underestimate . . . the power of
graciousness and simple politeness," he told students at commencement.
"Be ever gentle and caring, and you cannot help but quit yourselves like
men."
A colleague, Paul Piazza, called him a mentor to a
generation of teachers at the school whose great gift was making people feel
good.
"He was an extraordinary teacher who was also one of the
gentlest people I know," Piazza said. "He was able to draw the best
out of everybody who met him, and he called upon the best in the boys.
He never talked down to them -- he was always positive, always at the
highest level, and I think the boys responded to that."
He was held in such regard by students that the senior
class awards an annual prize to the faculty member who best emulates Mr.
McCune's demeanor.
He retired in 1995 after 14 years as head of the Upper
School but was called back to work in the summer of 1997, when headmaster
Mark Mullin was ousted. Mr. McCune served as the top school
official until 1999, when he retired a second time.
Born in Pittsburgh, he graduated from Princeton University
and served in the Army's Counter Intelligence Corps in Baltimore and
Stuttgart, Germany. After leaving the service, he became a history
teacher at the Choate School in Wallingford, Conn. He received a
master of arts degree in liberal studies from Wesleyan University in 1966.
He arrived at St. Albans that year and by 1970 was the
Folger Chair in History. A 1991 Washington Post Magazine article about
the school said Mr. McCune was "known for a ferocious game of tennis,
the world's neatest illegible handwriting (locally called 'McCuneiform') and
a perennial youthfulness."
Mr. McCune also enjoyed hiking, sketching, reading
and listening to classical and jazz music. He tutored at the Garrison
School after his second retirement and taught English as a second language
at Briggs Memorial Baptist Church in Bethesda for the past five years.
He was the author of the Washington National Cathedral's
scholars program and taught art history in Zermatt, Switzerland, in 1996.
He served on the governing boards of St. Albans, the National Cathedral
School, St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School in Alexandria and the Norwood
School in Bethesda. He also was on the College Board's advisory board
for the mid-Atlantic states.
Mr. McCune also was a member of the Chevy Chase
Club.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth Reid
McCune of Bethesda; two children, John F. McCune Jr. of Bethesda
and Rebecca Jewett of Washington; a sister; and five grandchildren.
On Wednesday May 9, 2007 JOHN FOSTER McCUNE of
Bethesda, MD died at Sibley Hospital. He was the beloved husband of
Elizabeth Reid McCune. He is also survived by son John Foster
McCune, his wife Gretchen and their children Chloe,
Margaret and John Foster McCune, III; daughter Elizabeth
McCune Jewett, her husband T. Sanford Jewett and their children
Reid and Georgia. Also survived by his sister Joanne
Horton. Services will be held on Wednesday, May 16, 2007 at 11
a.m. at Washington National Cathedral. In lieu of flowers, memorial
contributions may be made to The John F. McCune '52 Scholarship Fund,

May 16th, Tom Arganbright added:
It certainly
was sad news to hear about Jack's death. Jack and I enlisted
in the army together in the summer of 1952 for 3 years. We went to
infantry basic training at Indiantown Gap near Harrisburg and then spent 14
months at the Counter Intelligence school outside Baltimore. We learned
how to be "counter spies" then spent 6 months in German language school and
6 weeks in investigative photography and microfilming. Jack and I
made numerous weekend trips between Baltimore and Pittsburgh in my 1939
Chrysler! We then went to Germany and Jack was assigned to
Stuttgart and I to Berlin. I had a good time in my 3 year army experience
made all the more enjoyable by being with Jack most of the time. He
really was a great guy.

Casey, apparently from liver complications associated with
Hepatitis C. Roseanne and I go way back to Junior High days when she moved to Colony
Circle, two houses away from me. Her death brings back many memories of good times together including her
being a brides maid in our wedding 53 years ago. When I last saw Roseanne
2 years ago at a small gathering of "old" '48 friends, she seemed fine --
just as witty and enthusiastic as ever. That's how I'll always
remember her.
From
Bill Erdman, WebMaster:
A very pleasant e-mail from
Barbara Adams Norris
brought sad news about Rosanne. As Barbara
prophetically noted in 2002, "...my procrastination (about writing about
myself) came from feeling that I have little of substance to report..."
I know we all have accomplished much in our lifetimes and procrastinate.
But I also regret that little of substance has been reported about
Rosanne except Barbara's friendship over the years.
Again, it is so sad that we know so little about each other and then when
I move an individual's "history" to the "Gone" page, nothing
more is ever added. We are sad but life goes on and we will soon
forget her along with the 139 other classmates that have preceded her (78
known deceased, 62 lost & presumed dead) . Rosanna's "dash"
is over (1930 - 2005 which reads "1930 DASH 2005") and all
of her classmates reading this will join her in a few years.
"Few" doesn't seem like a lot, does it? Enjoy today and tell
everyone dear to you that you truly love them. Don't wait.

Deceased: DAVID MILLER
Age 80, of Erie, died Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at his
residence following a brief illness. David was
born in Pittsburgh January 14, 1930, a son of the late
Richard and Edna Phillips Miller. He
graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School in Pittsburgh and
Washington- Jefferson College in Washington, PA.
David served in the Second Army Division including a
tour of duty in Korea. He enjoyed sailing, loved
music and travelled extensively. He worked in sales
for Amerial Systems in Erie and retired in 2006. In
addition to his parents, David was preceded in death
by a sister Shirley. He is survived by two
daughters: Laura Miller of Pittsburgh and Mary
Brooks and her husband Paul Rathke of Knoxville,
TN. Also, he is survived by three grandchildren:
Emily Carter Brooks, Jackson Connor Brooks and
Melissa Carrington Brooks. David is also
survived by his beloved companion Nancy Morgan. Burial
will be private. Memorials may be made to NAMI or Presque
Isle Partnership. Send condolences at
www.Burtonfuneralhome.com.
Nancy Morgan's Son-in-law. Bill Cambell added
this additional information: Dave
was the executive vice president for Sterling Factories and
operations manager at Amerial Systems in Erie and retired in
2006. David is also survived by his beloved
companion, Nancy Morgan in Erie PA, whom he spent the
last years of his life with. Reverend
Jerry
Goddard officiated the memorial service and
Bud Keen
spoke at the service. Both are graduates of Mt. Lebanon High
School class of 1948. My relationship to Dave
is I am Nancy Morgan's Son-in-law. I knew
Dave for a short four years, but it was long enough that
I will remember him forever as will my wife and son.
He was a very true individual and one of the greatest people
I have had the privilege of knowing. We would be lucky if
there were more David Millers on the earth. I
am sorry to be the deliverer of the sad news.
Peace Be With You. Bill Campbell
From
Bill Erdman,
WebMaster: Another loss for our class.
Dave was a
well known guy in High School and had lots of friends - I consider
myself fortunate that I was one of those although I lost track of him
after graduation. We saw him at the 5oth and 60th Reunions but
didn't have time to get information for his page. Sadly, I learned
more about Dave from his obituary than from any correspondence so
there isn't much to show for his history.

From
Bill Erdman, WebMaster: I was not ready for this news.
Bob Woeber sent a simple note, "Bill, I just heard that Joy died recently." Nothing else. I sadly moved Joy
from the "Active" page to the "gone.htm" page. A relatively simple operation. But the memories aren't so simple. The only information on her page after 55+ years was a 7th grade picture, a senior picture, a 50th reunion picture, one line stating what she was involved in in High School and "Died early 2004". That's it! I can only remember her as a vibrant and attractive classmate who was always nice to talk with. Fifty-five years later I haven't a clue as to her accomplishments, family, successes or any thing else that would be nice to reflect on at this point. How very, very sad. Joy, we never knew you and it was our loss.

 Charles Portman
Pittsburgh, PA
April 20th, 2001
8th grade
Bill,
one of the few upsides regarding our deceased classmates is finding the
obituary and being able to revel in reading the accomplishment of our
departed friends. I had forgotten how involved Chic was in Three
Rivers Stadium. All reference to him in the obit is Chic and we
use Chick, but not sure what his preference was. –
Tom, August 2008
Deceased: CHARLES E. PORTMAN HE RAN STADIUM IN STEELERS,
BUCS GLORY DAYS
April 25, 2001 Obituary - Charles E. "Chic" Portman ran Three
Rivers Stadium in the 1970s, the glory days when the Steelers won four
Super Bowls and the Pirates won two World Series.
Mr. Portman,
a lawyer and lifelong Mt. Lebanon resident, served as the stadium's
executive director for 10 years, from its opening in 1970 until resuming
his law career in private practice in 1980.
"That place was always busy. It was a great deal of
fun," said James L. Smith, a Mt. Lebanon insurance executive who chaired
the Stadium Authority board when Mr. Portman was director.
"Chic was the guy -- the point man on tickets.
Everybody wanted tickets for the playoff games or World Series, but
sometimes he would have to say no," Smith said.
"Just as there is with PNC Park now, there was a lot of
excitement back then with Three Rivers," said former Mayor Pete
Flaherty, who named Mr. Portman as stadium director.
"Chic had to do yeoman's work to get the new
stadium all figured out. It was a big move, going from Forbes Field in
Oakland to the North Side. But he was a lawyer and could understand the
complicated lease terms with the teams."
Mr. Portman
died Friday of complications of pancreatitis. He was 70.
“Mr. Portman did a great job of running the
stadium and making it a viable and terrific place for the Steelers,"
said team owner Dan Rooney.
Brian Portman, the youngest of Mr. Portman's eight children,
recalled how his father would take them to the stadium in the 1970s.
"It was brand new back then. We went in through the back
doors and went into Dad's office. We had access to the locker rooms.
The equipment manager would let us run around.
"One day the Steelers and Pirates played a softball game
(at the stadium). My brothers and sisters and I got to run around on
the field that day. [Steelers founder] Art Rooney gave us a football
signed by the players, and [then-manager of the Pirates] Chuck Tanner, I
think, gave us a baseball signed by the players. It was really cool."
Shortly after the stadium opened, some children were
injured jumping off one of the ramps, Smith recalled. For some reason,
there was a lot of red tape involved with getting protective rails
installed.
"But Chic said, 'I'll get it done,' and he did,"
Smith said. "Everything about the stadium was a big deal. Whatever was
newsworthy, it was three times as much because it had to do with the
stadium."
Mr. Portman's
first wife, Anne, the mother of his children, died in 1991. He
married Maureen Coyne in 1999.
In addition to his wife and his son Brian, who
lives in Chicago, Mr. Portman is survived by four other sons,
Charlie, Mark and Eric, all of San Diego, and Dan
of Portland, Ore.; three daughters, Jean Mosites of Peters,
Emily Klink of North Canton, Ohio, and Christine Hunter of
Chicago; three sisters, Mary Lou Ward of Wheeling, W.Va.,
Patricia Cain of Pittsburgh and Virginia Wintz of Orlando,
Fla.; a brother, James Portman of San Diego; and eight
grandchildren.
Chick's first wife was Ann Brown, Class of 1949 or 50 from Mt Lebanon. She died of Cancer.
Chick re-married Maureen Coyne 2 years ago. A wonderful couple. He had been in the hospital for an operation which was a "last ditch" effort to take care of his complicated problems.
Bob Woeber says, "We had been good friends. We will miss him."

At Bud Stevenson's 70th BD party |
Bill, I just heard last night that
Chick Portman died yesterday (April 20th, 2001). He had been in the hospital for an operation which was a "last ditch" effort to take care of his complicated problems.
Chick had been married to Maureen Coyne for around a year. We had been good friends. We will miss him.

From
Bill Erdman, WebMaster: Ann Pricer and
Mary Jane Wibner are 2 more sad additions to this page. I didn't know Ann very well in High School but that doesn't ease the pain of moving her from her rightful place on the "P" page.
Mary Jane
is a lot tougher as I knew her reasonably well from various classes we had together. Again, I am so sorry that we didn't get a chance to know more about them as I am sure that they both made this world a little better place for all those that knew them. So long you two, it's been good to know you both, even for little while.

and Tom Arganbright to
locate
all
of
our
classmates.
