From
Bill Erdman, WebMaster: Life has a way of
giving each of us a wake-up call every so often. Today I received
mine from Kathy when she called about Harry's death.
Harry and I both went to Mt Lebanon High School - in fact we rode
back and forth many times and each trip was a memorable event. For
example, Harry and another Lehigh Classmate,
John Stallings, both played trumpet
and enjoyed playing them as we went through the Pennsylvania Turn Pike
tunnels - both of them hanging out the windows and playing as loudly as
they could!
I've stopped at Harry's homes
several times and got to know Kathy and some of their kids. I
will miss him and his numerous phone calls asking about the Reunions.
Rest well, Harry, and keep blowing your horn for all heaven to
hear.
-
Bill <><
February 2009
By phone March, 2007: Had an accident-prone
2006. Kathy and he were involved in a freak accident in
their own driveway that resulted in a broken shoulder for Harry
and complications for Kathy. Kathy had a hip
replacement 1st August and this didn't help her recovery at all.
Otherwise they are doing "OK, so far."

Spring
2007 Alumni Bulletin - In early November (2006) I
received a number of email photos of a group of happy and good‑looking "seasoned

Sue Ann

Ralph Fortney,
who also have a place on Hilton
Head, joined this group for dinner. The conversation got around to the
classmates’ prowess many years ago in varsity baseball and basketball. All
agreed they were awesome jocks. Today they are awesome bocce ball players,
fortified with copious adult beverages. Some things never change!
Editor's note: Harry
died right after this news article was published)
From Pat Moran's Fall, 2003 Column: Harry Stowers sent this along after our 50th. After Lehigh, the Air Force, marrying Sarah, his hometown sweetheart from West Virginia, and the sales department at Caterpillar Tractor Co., Peoria, Ill., Harry and his two brothers, including Eugene '44, obtained a Caterpillar franchise in Eastern Tennessee in 1960. Today, Harry is chairman of Stowers Machinery Corp., and his eldest son, Wes, is running the company. Harry says that he and Sarah divide their time between Knoxville and their home in Hilton Head, S.C., and that they both enjoy good health. |

From

Bill,
Some
very
sad
news.
Attached
you
will
find
the
obituary
for
Phil
Sturiale.
After
his
communiqué
to
you
last
year
about
his
cancer,
I
contacted
him
and
we
set
up
a
luncheon
engagement
for
mid
November
in
Freehold
N.J.
(a
point
midway
between
us
here
in
N.J.).
We
had
a
very
pleasant
get
-together
and
planned
on
another
after
his
return
from
a
winter
hiatus
in
Florida.
On
March
22
he
sent
out
an
e-mail
advising
of
a
reoccurrence
of
the
cancer
and
his
inability
to
make
the
Florida
trip.
Subsequent
to
that
I
sent
him
two
e-mails
inquiring
of
his
current
status.
When
I
didn't
hear
from
him,
I
feared
the
worst
and
searched
his
local
newspaper.
As
it
turned
out,
my
search
was
was
made
the
day
after
he
died.
A
very
sad
ending
for
one
of
my
old
dorm
mates
and
a
good
friend
even
though
we
didn't
see
much
of
each
other
after
graduation.
Best
regards
to
you
and
all
classmates.

From
50th
Reunion
Book,
2002

During
the
50
years
that
have
elapsed
since
leaving
Lehigh,
the
most
significant
and
meaningful
events
of
my
life
have
all
involved
my
family.
Oh
yes,
I
had
a
good
career
with
what
had
been
a
great
company.
I
retired
from
AT&T
Bell
Laboratories,
after
38
productive
years
with
AT&T
as
Department
Head
of
Computing
Technology
at
the
Holmdel,
NJ
Laboratories.
Although
I
began
and
ended
my
AT&T
career
with
Bell
Labs,
I
had
many
diverse
assignments
in
several
AT&T
companies.
One
such
assignment
took
my
family
out
of
our
Brooklyn
home
to
the
little
town
of
Cooperstown,
NY
for
almost
2
years.
That
was
a
culture
shock
to
us,
but
we
loved
it.
My
family
once
consisted
of
my
wife
Nina,
daughters
Rosanna
and
Francesca
and
son
Salvatore;
however,
God
chose
to
take
Rosanna
from
us
at
age
38.
Francesca
(Lehigh

is
married
to
Tom
Bartlett
(Lehigh

and
is
the
politician
of
the
family,
having
successfully
run

a
seat
on
the
Pennington,
NJ
Township
committee.
The
Bartlett's
2
children
(Matthew

Brittany)
are
our
only
grandchildren.
Salvatore
(Monmouth
'77)
has
been
married
10
years
but
not
blessed
with
any
children.
Since
retiring
in
1990,
I
spent
my
time
(hopefully)
being
a
good
grandfather
and
shuttling
between
our
New
Jersey
condominium
and
our
Jupiter,
FL
condominium.
I've
been
foolish
enough
to
spend
many
years
on
both
Condominium
Boards,
but
can
now
happily
say
I'm
retired
from
those
jobs
as
well.
March

-
Bill,
I
had
every
intention
of
joining
all
at
our
50th,
but
unfortunately,
a
not
so
nice
tumor
was
found
in
my
lung
last
month.
I
gave
up
smoking
36
years
ago,
but
I
guess
it
wasn't
soon
enough.
I've
just
started
Chemo
this
past
Thursday,
and
if
the
schedule
that
the
people
at
Sloan
Kettering
holds
up,
I'll
be
scheduled
for
surgery
early
in
June.
I'll
be
thinking
about
the

and
wishing
I
was
there.

your

got
to
me.
Here's
a
short
update
on
the
last
50

After
graduation,
I
joined
Bell
Laboratories
and
spent
the
next
38
years
holding
various
positions
in
different
divisions
of
AT&T.
Twenty
eight
of
those
years
were
with
Bell
Labs
from
which
I
retired
in
1990.
My
last
assignment
was
Department
Head
of
Computing
Technology
at
the
Holmdel,
NJ
Labs.
I
spent
the
following
two
years
consulting
before
completely
retiring.
Now
my
wife
Nina
and
I
spend
our
summers
in
Monmouth
Beach,
NJ
and
our
winters
in
Jupiter
FL..
Nina
and
I
have
been
married
for
47
years.
We
had
three
children,
Salvatore
(Monmouth
'77),
Rosanna
(Seton
Hall
'79)
and
Francesca
(Lehigh
'81).
Rosanna
passed
away
in
1995.
Francesca
married
Tom

(Lehigh

and
is
mother
to

As
of
now,
I
hope
to
join
you
at
