pmoran27@q.com;

In the 20 or so years since I've been your correspondent, this is the most difficult column I've had to write, My dear friend of 61 years, Bill Smith, passed away in August.  Bill was a Marine Corp veteran and member of the 1950 undefeated football team, and he LOVED Lehigh.  He was honored with the prestigious Alumni Award, the highest alumni award granted, for his volunteer service in working on our past four highly successful reunions.  Bill was Lehigh.  God bless you, Bill ‑you are missed.  Our collective 1952 hearts go out to Bill's widow, Barbara, and their four children, including Joanna (Jody) '79.

Bob Hoyt, Berwyn, Pa., e‑mailed that he had a nice visit in early '09 with Bob Horning and his wife, Joan, in Spring Island, S.C.  One of the Horning's  grandsons entered Lehigh last fall.  Bob Flynn saw Neil Randall and Dick Schaphorst at the Villanova game.  For many years, Neil and Dick worked together in Philly, sidestepped a corporate move to California, and then formed their own high‑tech company and prospered.  Bob volunteers at the welcome desk in the Alumni Memorial Building and is an active member of the Senior Alumni Council.  Thanks for the great message, Bob.

I learned that one of our outstanding athletes, Dick Gigon, passed away on Aug. 5.  He was an All-American soccer player and a talented baseball player.  Following his college career, Dick was selected by the U.S. Olympic Soccer Committee to participate in the 1952 Eastern Olympic Soccer Trials.  A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, Dick had a 31‑year career as a manager of design engineering with the Wright Aeronautical Division of Curtiss Wright.  He was inducted into the Lehigh Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000.

Thanks, classmates, for the cards, letters and e‑mails.  Keep it Lip, because our class is listening.

Deceased

Pat
