Skilled For A Purpose

Scriptures: Exodus 31:6b (NIV) – “Also I have given ability to all the skilled workers to make everything I have commanded you”

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) – “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’”

Message: When I read these two Scriptures, I think about my life and how these verses apply to me.  First, I know that God gave me numerous skills which I have used in making and crafting many unique, beautiful, and useful things.  For most of my life woodworking has been something I have really enjoyed.  I have always enjoyed putting a block of wood, a tree limb, or even a tree root on my lathe and see it transformed from an ugly, dull looking blank into a shaped, smooth finished wood item, or figurine.

In my adult years I have experienced things I once only dreamed about as a young lad and a teenager.  I know these things were all part of the plans God had for my life because my dreams were all part of Gods plan.

Six years ago, when one of my legs was amputated it was a devasting blow to my confidence and I had serious doubts about my future.  I found myself unable to walk, unable to drive and unable to do things we take for granted.  I wondered if this too was part of Gods plan for me.  I know that things happen for a reason.  Bad circulation in my leg was the reason for my amputation, not Gods plan!

I still have a fervent desire to continue wood working, but I have been reluctant to get back in my shop because I have never regained my balance and I still have a fear of falling.  I know God is not finished with me and I am still praying that my woodworking skills will one day, once again, be utilized for some useful purpose.

Prayer: Dear God, I am so thankful that You had a plan for my life and I am also thankful for the skills given me, some of which enabled me to build and construct things of beauty and purpose.  You provide us all with skills; help us to use our skills to glorify You in serving others to continue building Your Kingdom here on earth.   Amen.
